What You're Actually Playing
GRAIN ROT is a horror co-op extraction builder. You are not a soldier — you're a Living Spark, a persistent little flame that possesses fragile wooden vessels. Each run, you ride a cursed elevator from your Outpost down into procedurally shifting ruins, smash everything that looks expensive, convert scrap to gold in the Grinder, and ride back up before the Corrupted turn your crew into kindling.
Between runs, everything you banked rebuilds the Outpost — stamina rooms, health rooms, inventory tiers that unlock real weapons, and new vessel blueprints. The Outpost is your save file; the runs are how you feed it.
Your First Run, Step by Step
- Finish the tutorial tasks at the Outpost. Biggy's chores (cleaning floors, patching walls) teach movement, grabbing and demolition — and skipping them slows early room efficiency.
- Take the mallet from Murch. It's your starter demolition tool. It's weak against the Corrupted — that's normal, weapons come from inventory tiers later.
- Read the elevator panel before descending. The symbols are run modifiers (Shop Cube, Fuse, Map Room, Trap). Say them out loud in voice chat.
- Stay shallow. The first biome layer teaches mallet rhythm and drops tutorial-grade glowy artifacts. Two or three Grinder loops, then extract.
- Grind once per room, then move. The Grinder screams — it is the loudest thing underground and pulls Corrupted toward you.
- Extract early. A modest successful extraction beats an ambitious run that ends in flames. If every vessel breaks, all carried loot is lost permanently.
The Rule That Matters Most: Death Is Not Death
When your vessel breaks, your Spark escapes the wreck and stays in the run. You can float, scout, ping teammates, and possess a fresh vessel — which may have a completely different ability set. The only true failures are your Spark fading out before you find a body, or the whole crew losing every vessel at once. So:
- Before your vessel gets low, mentally note where empty vessels or spare constructs are.
- If a teammate becomes a Spark, escorting them to a new body is a real objective, not charity.
- Never celebrate a full squad wipe chase — one survivor with loot beats four heroes with nothing.
Five Beginner Mistakes (and Fixes)
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wiping the crew chasing one more room | Everything carried is lost forever — not delayed, gone | Set an extract rule before descending (time, rot %, or loot value) and honor it |
| Ignoring the Grinder | You extract heavy scrap instead of bankable gold | Feed bulk furniture to the Grinder once per cleared room |
| Grinding glowy artifacts | Blueprints are lost — artifacts belong to the Outpost unlocker, not the Grinder | Pocket artifacts; grind only furniture scrap |
| Riding the elevator while Rot-sick | Symptoms in transit can destroy a random Outpost room | Fire-cure Rot before boarding — see the Rot sickness guide |
| First runs with random trolls | Physics lets teammates launch your Spark or wall you in with monsters | Learn with trusted friends; the chaos is a feature, but it's rough as a first impression |
What to Unlock First
Gold spending order for new crews: East Wing Resolve stamina first (universal value — faster escapes), then inventory tiers (tier three unlocks the sword, hammer and gun — the single biggest power spike). Health and damage rooms next; cosmetics last. Full breakdown in the room upgrade priority list.
Learn three or four vessel types instead of maining one. When your vessel breaks mid-run, you possess whatever's nearby — crews that only know one build panic, crews that know several treat it as a free reroll.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first in GRAIN ROT?
Finish Biggy's tutorial chores at the Outpost, take the mallet from Murch, read the elevator modifiers, and run shallow Grinder loops in the first biome. Extract early — banked loot beats heroic wipes.
Is GRAIN ROT hard for beginners?
The basics are forgiving — vessel loss isn't death thanks to the Spark system — but noise management, Rot sickness and the full-wipe loot rule punish greed. Play your first runs with trusted teammates.
